Why Hiking is the New ‘It’ Way to Discover a Destination

by Mar 1, 2024

Over years of constant traveling, hiking has become one of my favorite ways to explore a destination. The untouched landscapes, quiet bliss of nature, and the ability to connect with locals makes venturing out even more incredible.

When searching for hikes in new destinations, I consider what the terrain is like, how crowded trails may be, and the food I can indulge in during or after! From mountains to red rocks and ocean views to deserts, hiking can take you into the unknown.

Here are my top 10 hiking destinations around the world!

Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

The village of Lauterbrunnen is nestled amidst the Swiss Alps where authenticity meets nature. The lush valleys are home to locals living a quintessential mountain lifestyle. You’ll hear cowbells ringing and waterfalls crashing as you explore this destination for your own slice of paradise. On my last hike there I stopped through mountain villages for some raclette and a pint of beer, it was one of my most surreal hiking experiences ever!

My favorite part about hiking in Grand Teton National Park, other than having summited the Grand itself, are the alpine lakes. There are crystalline watering holes throughout the range with many accessible options from parking lots on the water at Jenny Lake to hidden gems 10 miles away like Solitude Lake. Insider tip, do a morning hike and then enjoy lunch while paddle-boarding on String Lake!

Amalfi Coast, Italy

During my recent trip to Positano on the Amalfi Coast, I experienced a wellness journey at the famous Le Sirenuse. Complete with relaxing yoga, fresh foods, and hikes along the coast, I made friendships with locals that still sustain me today. The hikes showcased stunning views of the Tyrrhenian Sea with stops in tiny villages for snacks and a touch of history.

Crete, Greece

Exploring the trails of Crete, Greece introduces adventurers to a captivating mosaic of jagged peaks, dramatic ravines, and idyllic shorelines. From the iconic Samaria Gorge to the rugged expanse of the White Mountains, each trail promises a unique blend of verdant landscapes and rocky vistas, inviting hikers to delve into the island’s diverse terrain. One of my favorite travel memories includes jumping into the sea after finishing the gorge hike. A body of water has never been more refreshing!

Peru

Peru’s Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic hikes in the world. This inspiring journey treks through the Andes Mountains to the first glimpse of the ancient city at the Sun Gate. Hikers have the chance to connect with local porters during the multi-day journey adding to the authentic experience of the Peruvian wilderness. My favorite thing about this journey was the ability to see other Incan ruins that can’t really be accessed aside from hiking.

Oman

Hiking in Oman is the best way to experience the unique villages of this underrated country. The Hajar Mountains hold cliff-top villages and natural springs all connected through well maintained trails. Valley or wadi trails are popular even among locals with their friendly Omani disposition. Hiking deep into Wadi Bani Khalid and diving into secluded crystal limestone pools was one of the more unique travel experiences I’ve ever had.

St. Lucia

The volcanic formation of the island of St. Lucia created a wondrous landscape for exploring the twin lava spires, Gros Piton and Petit Piton. These treks go smoothly with an experienced guide as the peaks take on strenuous uphill sections. St. Lucia also offers many beginner-friendly hikes around the lush rainforests to refreshing waterfalls where the array of wildlife can be seen.

hiking in sedonaSedona, Arizona

Sedona is a spiritual land of beaming red rocks with seven “energy vortexes.” Whether you believe in this type of energy or not, no one ever leaves Sedona without feeling wowed. Trails like Cathedral Rock or climbing Wilson Mountain showcase the area’s natural beauty. I love this spot so much that I now live there part time!

The Dolomites

Embarking on a mountain escape to the Italian Dolomites immerses travelers in a world of unparalleled beauty and serenity. Hiking trails like the Tre Cime di Lavaredo offer panoramic views and charming alpine villages that leave visitors breathless. For a bit more adventure, try one of my favorite activities, Via Ferrata, which was actually invented in The Dolomites to aid in the movement of troops during WWI!

Zion, Utah

Traverse Zion National Park’s magnificent landscapes, from the iconic red rock formations of Angel’s Landing to the tranquil beauty of the Narrows. For the ultimate adrenaline rush, try canyoneering with an expert guide to tailor to your skill level as you hike, and rappel through the gorgeous canyons.

Hiking is the new ‘it’ way to explore both familiar and new destinations. Clients are constantly telling me they want luxury AND off the beaten path, authenticity AND great service, beautiful landscapes AND fantastic hotels. Adding in an element of hiking on your next trip is a standout way to accomplish it all.
